“Scrapin’ on the sally t”

On Smith Island, Chesapeake Bay, a waterman aboard the Sally T scrapes the shallows in search of peeler crabs. These crabs are carefully harvested and brought to nearby crab shanties, where they are watched closely until molting. The morning work is part of the time-honored process that transforms blue crabs into the Chesapeake’s celebrated delicacy — the soft-shell crab.
